About Me:

If I don't drive around the park,
I'm pretty sure to make my mark.
If I'm in bed each night by ten,
I may get back my looks again,
If I abstain from fun and such,
I'll probably amount to much,
But I shall stay the way I am,
Because I do not give a damn.

Dorothy Parker (1893-1967)

I trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and spent nearly 20 years in 'the business'. I made a living mainly from comedy on TV and in theatre. I haven't done any performing in recent years, and I have no desire to go back to dealing with the business side of show business. However, the urge to perform does still grab me from time to time, so I thought I'd do a few readings, etc, as the mood takes me - just for fun! I've also included a few videos of some of my earlier work, also just for fun.

Regarding the reading of poetry aloud, The Sunday Times critic, A.A. Gill said:

"Almost all actors are appalling versifiers. They come to poetry as if it were drama, an audition piece, a soliloquy. They make poems performances. In short, actors act, so we shouldn't be surprised. But poetry isn't drama: the imposition of a character, the inflection of emotion and opinion, diminishes it. Despite its origins, the whole business of out-loud poetry is problematic. Nobody will ever read you Donne or Shakespeare sonnets or Eliot with more poignancy and meaning, more beautifully, than the voice in your head."

I agree that the best reading of any poem is done by the 'voice in your head', but I disagree that the out-loud reading of a poem should not have vocal tone and colour to reflect the emotion or character of the piece. I agree that a poem is not a dramatic acting piece or an audition speech, but a dry. colourless reading also diminishes a poem as effectively as an over-the-top acting performance. I was put off poetry when I was young mainly due to the dreary, precious, rather boring mode of delivery that was standard way back when. I find 'performed' poetry far more appealing; but each to their own...
