About Me:
We are Dawn and Don Cheek (mother/son duo), instructors here at Palomar since Fall 2007. Introduced to dance at a very early age, Dawn was teaching tap, jazz, and Polynesian dance by age 12. Due to her love for the dance and culture, she decided to focus on Polynesian dance and studied under Valerie Sills, Liz Kahaleponi Edwards, and Nia Soule. Don, being his mother's son, became a drummer and fire-knife dancer. He's had the honor of working with Teri Rua, Tini Turi Ake, Pete Sanoa, Malala McCormick, Foi Moi, and Liz Kahaleponi Edwards (to name a few!). He continues to perform and has passed on his knowledge of Polynesian instruments and fire-knife dancing for many years now as a teacher.
We've been active in Polynesian entertainment since 1975 when Dawn and husband Donald founded the Tiki Hut Dance Studio which became a major part of the Southern California Polynesian Dance scene during the 1970s and 1980s. We've had other dance groups since then and currently manage the Tipanie O Patitifa dance company.

from Yvonne: after going backNforth with tech support last week, looks like I can generate videos correctly again. Still have some editing issues but at least that's side issue now. I've uploaded the improved Hawaiian warmup jan24 and will get the rest up as soon as I have time to rework them (and take down the bad ones), then there's vids from Feb7 and tonight... ugh just adding to the backlog I already have!

from Yvonne: I finished and posted the vids yesterday, took a look at one of them today and the sound is not sync'd with the movie!!! Stupid Roxio! I'll have to contact them for help and redo the vids but I'll leave them up in the meantime.

from Yvonne: on Jan24 we did Hawaiian warmup with a new move, reviewed verse1 of Kiss & Never Tell and added verse2, reviewed Henehene Kou Aka (see past vids), did freestyle Tahitian warmup, worked on Tipanie Otea adding Tangi (see past vids), reviewed Atika from our Aparima Set (see past vids), and did a demo of a fun fast Tahitian dance Hairy Man. I did some computer updates and now my video editing won't work -- I hope to sort it out and get the vids up soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spring semester has started and on Jan17 we did Hawaiian warmup, learned the 1st verse of a new Hawaiian dance, watched a demo of Kaimuki (see past vids), did Tahitian freestyle warmup, and worked on Tipanie Otea (also see past vids including Hitoetoe and Vahine Tahiti). Enjoy!

Happy New Year!! I'm very grateful that you've posted these vids very helpful by the way xD but my favorite vid is the tahitian drill from Aug 2011! and I seriously need to practice this one, I can level down all the way to squat position, but coming up is a different story lol have a great semester this spring and success to everyone in dancing.....

Still working on transferring Hawaii videos... in the meantime, here are some performances by Kekulili o Kailani and Pride of Polynesia, a few of the many dance troupes who performed during the 2011 run of the San Diego County Fair... enjoy!

@ Gille87 ~ I haven't uploaded some vids I mention on the channel because (a) we already have plenty of versions, (b) it's too short, and/or (c) (IMHO) it's not good enough to spend the time it takes me to edit, generate, and upload the final version. Anyway, we have loads of good and really good Tahitian (and Hawaiian) warmup vids since Fall2010 -- best I can do is suggest you go back to those ; )
