This is not jazz, but it is interesting how many folk forms in the Balkans have many similarities to jazz--- especially the clarinet styles, using a much broader pallet of timbres and nuances than "classical". Perry is the supreme exponent of these clarinet characteristics in the west.

having influences and being derivative are entirely different things. Beefheart was the Stravinsky of rock. And there are plenty of successful folks that are not EVEN clever at being derivative. but Zappa should be praised for his satire. he was one of the great ones in that bag.
