The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman investigates complaints from prisoners, those on probation and those held in immigration removal centres. He also investigates all deaths that occur among prisoners, immigration detainees and the residents of probation hostels (Approved Premises).
The Ombudsman is appointed by the Secretary of State for Justice and is completely independent of the Prison Service, the National Probation Service and the Border and Immigration Agency.
The current Ombudsman is Stephen Shaw. He is supported by a team of deputies, assistants, investigators and administration staff.
