Shape Note Songs from The Missouri Harmony, 2005 edition
The Missouri Harmony was a widely used tunebook on the American frontier from the 1820's through 30's. The original book contained many songs in common with the later, even more popular book, The Sacred Harp (first published in 1844). In 2005, a group of shape note enthusiasts in the St. Louis vicinity put out a new edition, containing the songs NOT included in The Sacred Harp, plus several songs, old and new, in the authentic early American shape note tradition. The videos on this list were recorded at recent Sacred Harp/shape note singings and conventions in Missouri and the midwest.
shape note/Sacred Harp Christmas songs
Shape note singing is a traditional American style dating back as early as colonial days. The songs on this list are taken from traditional shape note tunebooks such as The Sacred Harp, and The Southern Harmony, The Missouri Harmony, and sung by groups of singers who get together just to sing with each other. The songs are favorites at Sacred Harp/shape note singings year-round, but especially appropriate during the Christmas season.
Shape note songs by William Billings
William Billings is generally thought to be the first American-born composer, and 'the father of American choral music.' Born in Boston in 1746, his compositions were popular in the times surrounding the American Revolution, but by his death in 1800, were mainly forgotten or neglected in the mainstream. However, many of his songs had been included in various shape-note tunebooks and thus, were still known and loved in the rural New England, along the frontier, and in southern areas where acapella shape-note singing had spread, and continued in favor. Tunebooks such as The Missouri Harmony and The Sacred Harp included shape-note versions of such favorites as 'Chester,'' 'Africa,' 'David's Lamentation,' 'Jordan,' "Paris,' as well as the anthems such as 'Rose of Sharon' and 'The Lord is Risen Indeed (Easter Anthem') and Christmas favorites, 'Judea' and 'Shiloh.'
These tunes are still sung with characteristic enthusiasm wherever Sacred Harp style shape note singings and conventions are held.
Included on this playlist, among titles featuring a single song, are a few videos that include a group of songs, one of which is by William Billings.
