The Palio race lasts just under two minutes, but getting the race started can take much more time. The horses don't seem to want to settle into their predetermined starting lineup.

The Palio of Siena occurs twice a year, first on July 2 and again on August 16. The August race, spanning back to the 1600's, is dedicated to the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Aug. 15). Several days of celebration, preparation, and practice races proceed this unique event. The lives of the Sienese revolve around these annual events. It is in their blood. It is their life. And once you experience this event yourself, with all of its pageantry, excitement, and nuance, it will be in your blood too. Enjoy what I've tried to capture here! This is Il Palio di Siena, a centuries old tradition held in the Piazza del Campo in Siena, Italy. Of the 17 traditional neighborhoods, 10 have the honor to field a horse and jockey twice each year. The daily lives of the city's residents revolve around this unique event. On this day, the neighborhood (or Contrada) named Giraffa won the coveted race. All photos and video by Phil Garcia.
