Rivets Aylesbury Mandeville Road Before It Was Bulldozed

Rivets Aylesbury Mandeville Road Before It Was Bulldozed. Taken 5th June 1997

    PGD5051 PGD5051 commented:

Aylesbury was once a fascinating manufacturing town: my father, a printer, spoke of Hazel, Watson & Viney (the town's bookbinders) in almost hallowed tones. A girlfriend's Dad was a shopsteward at Rivets, proud to call himself an Aylesbury man. I came to live here in the 70's; the planners had do...

    Thirty Days - Strawbs

    From 1971's From the Witchwood

    Lyrics:

I have people to free, they're depending on me

So I can't afford to die

Get them safely back, then I won't...

Heard this for the 1st time when we crashed the staffroom one evening at a 6th form field centre in N Yorks. Fell in the love with the Strawbs then and, incidentally, a lovely half Danish lass.

Ah, the giddy memories of youth! Still one of my top 5 albums tho'.

    GWR Churchward 2-8-0 2807 on Llangollen Railway,14th July 2010.

Last day in steam on the Ll R before returning to Toddington. On a cloudy day which gave nice flat light and lovely exhaust, the elegant old lady a...

A beautiful locomotive restoration. Much as I love Castles, a GWR 8-coupled is something else. 2807 in steam makes up for the fact that Didcot's 38 is going to be out of traffic for a long time.

Mid-Hants Big Four Steam Gala: Part Two

Part Two of my video, shot on Saturday 13 September.

    PGD5051 PGD5051 commented:

Nice couple of videos. Very much captures the feel of a "proper" working railway. I'm rather fond of the MHR - stiff gradients for the locomotives to work at.

    Leicester & Swannington Railway

A walk up the line from WestBridge, Leicester covering what was left of the L&SR up to Desford Junction in 1964 just before the track was lifted.

@LancastrianScot - My great-great-grandfather (Thomas Dumelow) was a Leicester & Swannington driver. I've photos of him on his locomotive @ West Bridge & of the Glenfield portal & crossing keeper's house. If you think these would be useful, please contact me - tho' I've no idea how you do that vi...

@ 4.10: West Bridge. Oh my goodness, the memories. I caught the bus to here & walked to school along the cut. Left Leicester, came back >20yrs later; nearly crashed car - GCR all gone! Moored our narrowboat @ Castle Gardens last summer & spent a long time looking & dreaming & trying to hear A3s i...
