Orinda Horsemens Association is a unique treasure in the SF Bay area. OHA was established in 1968 as a cooperative horse pasture for the local children in the then sleepy town of Orinda, near Berkeley, CA. Many years later OHA moved to another further-from-town location. We took over a cattle lease on the land that drains into the EBMUD water district San Pablo Reservoir. Currently there are 38 horses, 31 members and 14 associate members, mostly adults and their families.

The current lease includes about 450 acres with 5 managed pastures. The pasture borders both Tilden Park and the San Pablo Dam Reservoir. The horses job is to graze the land for fire abatement. There are a few stalls to be used for emergency use and occasional convenience such as shoeing or vet visits. OHA has a large dirt arena, a few hay corrals, two hay barns and a tack shed. Co-op members share feeding chores in the winter months. Each member is responsible for work hours to benefit the pasture. Membership is composed of an amazing cross section of talented people who manage to run via volunteerism a 479 acre range with no employees. East Bay Municipal Utility District has two other sister horse pastures in addition to hundreds of acres of cattle grazed land in the watershed. There is a long wait list to get in.
