Great singer, and great interpretation. It is amazing that few young baritones today have ever even heard of him. He replaced Leonard Warren in several of his roles when he suddenly passed away. His Scarpia is my favorite on recording.

@thechinadesk Yes, very true. Talking about voice technique is usually futile.

It is so entwined with personal taste, not to mention so many balanced efforts which combine to make a technique, that talking about it is almost impossible.

RIP, great one! You sure showed us how to do it. Now, you can proudly sing with them in heaven.

@SuperDarchangel I suppose you had to hear him live. Keep in mind...he was a HUGE star. There had to be a reason for that...don't you think?

@sobchakdrums Agreed. He started opening more and more at the passaggio, and soon a big wobble came into his voice. I heard him late in his career...wobble city. But that glorious top was still there. The Ab in the Prologo was simply nuclear. Never forget it.

The problem here is that although we men do sing "in the mask", DON'T feel it there like a woman does. There are so few tenors with true "baritonal" quality in their sound these days that many who hear Kaufmann now think this is a bad thing! Ha ha! ALL the great tenors of the past had this sound! He is a great vocalist, as well as a great artist, and this..coupled with movie star looks! What more...

This really sounds good, Eric. Beautiful passaggio work, and a round, Italianate sound, my friend. Keep up this kind of singing and you can't fail.

Why can't someone help this tenor find his voice? Half of it is missing.

This is just wrong. Vocally, musically, and dramatically. Don't people ever pay any attention to the great performances of past years and learn something from them? Why are singers such as these featured on the biggest stages of the world? They are 3rd rate...all three of them.

Ragged and rushed. So much talent, and no idea how to sing. If only he could find a good teacher to line this big unwieldy mess up. He has it all, and should be the greatest tenor in the world now.

This is not Rigoletto. It is well done...but it is not Rigoletto. Rigoletto is a singer like Robert Merrill, Cornell MacNeil, Matteo Managuerra, or so many other BARITONES. This is the ego of a man who refuses to step down.

Stupendous. And much better than Galouzine. Not swallowed and dark. Giacomini-like...but he, too, often went too far to the dark side. This young tenor has no rivals right now.
