If you're considering attending the UW or moving to Madison, there are some things to think about, which never crossed my mind when I made the decision to move here:
Although the university is very large, Madison is not. It has all of 2 amenities: a nice lakeshore where you can walk or sail, and a thriving bar scene - UW is a top rated "party school".
There is little here to attract dedicated, professional staff - for all its self-promotion, an outsized bureaucracy in a small town will inevitably fill in with sponges and jobsworths.
Those of us who do pursue academics make easy targets for those who game the system, including the thieves and perverts who gravitate here.
Alumni have no standing at the UW; when you complete a UW degree, you become nothing more than a non-student in its eyes.
