Putin and Yeltsin have nothing in common other than the office that they held. Putin is competent, and Yeltsin was not. My point in the comparison was that not even having one competent leader would not have been enough in Russia in the 1990s. No one in Russia knew how to interpret the events unfolding, and so many foreigners, former bureaucrats and criminals took advantage of that. Yeltsin, like Gorbachev had a naive trust for the west, even though the west was the source of the Soviet economic problems in the 1980s (by planning an oil glut in the global market, they sabotaged the primary money making export of the Soviet Union, among other things) Also, there were other foreigners in the Kremlin. Ekaterina the Great was German.

About your comment about Tadic and Yeltsin over a year ago: Yeltsin was in over his head, he meant well but the times were turbulent and there was no guide book for the new Russia. Russia had enemies at home and abroad, and it was not clear who could be trusted. Criminals often had more power than the government. In the end, all he could do was drink, while Russia and the world blamed him for problems beyond his control. I do not think that even Putin could have done much better if he were in charge in the 1990s.

Haha, no I didn't ever think of comparing you to that guy :) Well the truth is that we live in an age countries in the size of Greece can't stand alone, no matter how important they are. The Eurasian Union seems like a solution against the EU which lost its meaning and is not for the interests of nations and their people. And the fact that Russia would lead such a union contents me for the known cultural reasons.
