The second selection is the second movement of Franz Schubert's "Deutsche Messe" (DV827), entitled "Heilig, heilig, heilig." And this is an extraordinary performance of it.

Staying in the game while making the transition to adult singer is difficult---almost no great trebles go on to become great adult singers. You have to respect those who try, and wish him the best. What I hear here is encouraging. I wonder what his modal voice sounds like?

Reciprocating steam engines are typically only 7-10% efficient. That's why they aren't around any more. I doubt the plane pictured had any real cruising range.

The slow tempo may be considered outmoded, but it really works here. Perhaps modern performers should take note. A fine rendition of a song of high expressive difficulty.

@skyhighsoprano I think that may vary with the exact type of voice--some types do seem to peak quite a bit earlier than that, possibly in the 26-32 range in cases. An elfin-lyric voice such as Grist's is so rare that reliable statistics may not even exist--I have heard only one other of the type...

Usually by this age, only the infrabasses (such as Pasyukov) are still singing. Amazing feat for a soprano.

It sounds as if she sings the entire first phrase (21 seconds at this tempo) on one breath--one of the few to choose to do this, and a nice touch it is.

@nachtsucherin Though all adult male singers above tenor qualify as countertenors, I understand you to be claiming that JK is a modal alto countertenor (like Russel Oberlin) rather than a baritone-falsettist (like Scholl or Daniels) or a hybrid countertenor such as Yoshikazu Mera or Erik Kurmanga...

And this was transposed down for him! The original (alto) scoring is a full octave higher. Perhaps the transposition was a mistake--or else they should have done a less radical transposition, even if that meant transposing the orchestral parts.

He hits that "doch" with wonderful authority, and his German diction is quite respectable. This must have been a fantastic performance to hear in person; too bad there seem to be no recordings with good sound.
