African & Afro-Caribbean Dance
DANCING WITH THE EARTH: The label, African Dance usually refers to the dance of Sub-Saharan Africa. Because of cultural differences in musical and movement styles, this label is quite general and doesn't even begin to describe the wide array of dance forms present in those many regions of Africa.
The seamless connection with African music is an integral part of the general characteristics of African Dance, as are the many ties to social rituals and functions.
Afro-Caribbean dances, along with related dance forms in the Americas, are directly connected/related to African Dance. The research of the American dance pioneer, Katherine Dunham, thoroughly confirms this fact. Other influences, present in the cultural landscape of the Americas, also had a big impact on African dance forms, and vice versa.
One of the universal characteristics, common to most African Dance and related styles, is the strong connection (physically and spiritually) to the ground on which one dances. Even in its most rebounding and aerial forms, African Dance is well grounded, always dancing with its perpetual partner; the Earth.

Art & Artists - [Visual & Fine Arts]
"THE VISUAL ARTS are art forms that create works which are primarily visual in nature, such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, printmaking, modern visual arts (photography, video, and filmmaking), design and crafts. These definitions should not be taken too strictly as many artistic disciplines (performing arts, conceptual art, textile arts) involve aspects of the visual arts as well as arts of other types. Also included within the visual arts[1] are the applied arts[2] such as industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design and decorative art." - Wikipedia

THE INCREDIBLE LIGHTNESS OF: The porch lights are on, but nobody is home. The headlights are on, but nobody is driving. There's a few screws loose, and some bats in the belfry. They went fishing, and never came back...
Basically, they're soft as a grape...

Classical Ballet
THE BEST OF: Mostly pure classical ballet (whatever that is). The digital videos on this list have been carefully selected. They represent the highest standards, the best. This playlist features the greatest classical ballet performances that can be found (and viewed) on YouTube.
No dance form is devoid of influences from related and distant cultures. To believe that a pure dance form even exists is to remain completely ignorant of the history of dance. Even classical ballet has, long ago, been influenced by African dance Thus, the occasional mixing in of contemporary styles, within this list, is inevitable.
Furthermore, within the classical ballet genre itself, a myriad of styles and methods exist, all influencing the development of the art. As aesthetic tastes within society change (or are simply lost), so too do stagings and styles of productions. While some older videos may now seem "quaint", they provide an invaluable resource, the historical record for an imperial, but too often imperiled, art form.

Classical Indian Dance
DANCING GODS OR DANCE OF THE GODS? ~ Indian Dance is as vast as an ocean and twice as deep. Its history begins at the dawn of civilization, and its array of styles and types too numerous to list here.
The number of dance forms influenced by the wide variety of Indian dance forms, still present in India, is extremely long. Likewise, the number of cultures which have infused Indian Dance styles with new methods, ideas, and ways is as long as any list of world cultures.
The amazing fact about the many forms of Indian Dance is its lineage - so many seemingly unbroken, going back in time, centuries upon centuries.

Contemporary & Modern Dance
AMBIGUOUS LABELS: Both Modern Dance and its more recent, ballet influenced, somewhat evolved counterpart - Contemporary Dance; suffer from the same age old problem — semantics.
What is Modern Dance? What is Contemporary Dance? These are questions asked often. The answer is not clear. By their natures, both Modern and Contemporary Dance are hard to define. As soon as we do, automatically we set limits — something which contradicts their pursuit of possibility. Both labels are often inadequate.
However, it is generally assumed that the so-called pioneers (Duncan, Wigman, St. Denis, Shawn, Graham, Humphrey, Limon, and many others), their dance progeny, and their techniques; may be considered Modern. That which uses a variety of techniques and methods, including a lot of ballet, is often considered Contemporary.

Jazz Greats - Stage & Screen
ISOLATING BUT COMMUNICATING: The list of influences on Jazz Dance, Tap, Hollywood, and the many Broadway Dance styles can easily fill volumes. From Africa to the deep South of the United States, to the influences of various American immigrant groups, to the power of normally thriving metropolitan culture(s); the quintessential American art form - Jazz - can only be topped by its moving and scintillating partner in crime — Jazz Dance.
In turn, Jazz Dance, with all its variety, has strongly influenced and even changed many seemingly unrelated forms of dance, such as classical ballet and modern. This list attempts to capture some of the energy and allure of the Jazz Dance greats.

Legends
VESSELS OF TRUTH: "All that's bright must fade, -- The brightest still the fleetest; All that's sweet was made But to be lost when sweetest." - Thomas Moore ---
"My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends—It gives a lovely light." - Edna St. Vincent Millay ---
Cool, like white hot coals they burned; Real, on the razor's edge they turned; Unstoppable, vanquish the still abyss, legends vibrate in time and bliss. - Christopher Flory ---
IN MEMORIUM: We remember the truly great ones - now gone from our midsts, but not forgotten.
Beacons of light from a more courageous and perhaps lost age. Defenders of liberty, equality, and human rights — expressing freedom. Great minds gave warning, and great masters gave clear mirrors with which to see ourselves... Perhaps it's time we look and listen.

Melanesian & Polynesian Dance
THE MARRIAGE BETWEEN SKY AND EARTH: Melanesian & Polynesian cultures are, in actuality, an extremely long list of intricate societies. While many of these cultures share similar roots, they are all unique. This means, of course, that their unique dances also offer a rich variety of styles, methods, uses, and traditions.
The stereotypical forms of Pacific Island dances do exist (where it is still possible to see extremely beautiful lyricism), but those forms do not comprise the whole picture. There are, among the many forms, extremely fierce warrior dances, and much more. Unfortunately, ALL these traditions are in real danger.
Falling into tourist traps of pigeon-holed cultures is a sure-fire way to eventually destroy them. To give traditional cultures at least a fighting chance for survival, start with humility and respect.

Middle Eastern & Maghrib Dance
SERPENTINE SEDUCTION & CONTRADICTION: The Middle East (Near East, and certain parts of Southwest Asia) have a rich and varied tradition of dance. Most of the Arab world, Cyprus, Anatolia, the Caucasus, the Balkans, and also much of Central Asia; are connected to these traditions. "Belly dance," is one of the blanket terms for so-called "oriental dance" in general, but is only one of the many styles encompassed within Middle Eastern dance.
Traditions, both recently developed and ancient, mix with the contradictions found in the modern and post-modern world — creating a tension of opposites. The sensual and the sublime, the divine and deadly, the seductive and the spiritual; all pull and push, one against the other, in a complex movement language within strong cultures.

Musica Universalis
MUSIC OF THE SPHERES: "Musica Universalis (lit. universal music) is an ancient philosophical concept that regards proportions in the movements of celestial bodies—the Sun, Moon, and planets—as a form of musica (the Medieval Latin name for music). This 'music' is not literally audible, but a harmonic and/or mathematical and/or religious concept." - Wikipedia - [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<wbr>Musica_universalis]
Native American Dance
THE DANCES OF HUMAN BEINGS: Native Americans are the indigenous peoples from North, Central, and South America. This covers a huge geographic and cultural expanse, including, but not limited to the continental United States (including parts of Alaska). In total, these many cultures comprise a large number of distinct tribes and ethnic groups. Some of these tribes have survived intact, as political communities, but many are lost to history.
One of the main surviving portals to some of these amazing cultures is, of course, their traditional dances. From this present window, peering into vibrant cultures, we may come to an understanding.
Much of the terminology referring to Native Americans is controversial. More controversial still are the many laws which still hold a noble people down, preventing progress. Thus, the wisdom of the elders continues to haunt and warn:
"Tribe follows tribe, and nation follows nation, like the waves of the sea. It is the order of nature, and regret is useless. Your time of decay may be distant, but it will surely come, for even the White Man whose God walked and talked with him as friend to friend, cannot be exempt from the common destiny. We may be brothers after all. We will see."

South & East Asian Dance
NATURE, EARTH, AND THE REALM OF THE GODS: South Asia is the most populous and most densely populated geographical region in the world. With an intricate history of interwoven, yet unique cultures; the dance in this part of the world is extremely rich and beautiful, complete with ancient traditions.
When we describe the traditional dances of South Asia, we are referring to cultures encompassing a large geographic area, which usually includes the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Also included: Afghanistan, Burma, Thailand, Tibet, and the British Indian Ocean Territories.
Both Thailand and India possess huge, deep dance traditions. Due to her immense size, many regions, and numerous local cultures; the many dance forms of India demand their own category — and thus are not listed here.
One could delve deeply into the dances of South Asia for years and still only skim the surface of these immense and rich traditions.
---
RIDING THE WIND HORSE: Gentle, flowing, dramatic, athletic; so many words can be used to describe the many dance forms from the so-called Orient, otherwise known as East Asia.
For the sake of clarity and simplicity, this East Asian Dance list refers (mostly) to the dances from: China, Japan, and Korea. Many other countries and cultures may/will be included. Suffice to say, we use these geographic labels out of necessity, not desire.
The cross cultural influences of these many traditional dance styles and techniques makes this a complicated and rich subject — one well worth the journey.
