One man, one song.
About Me:
I'm not a performer or a movie maker and I'm not trying to be either one.
This song is actually a poem I wrote and then put to music. It was written while I was in a state of true despair over the music - and culture - my biracial adolescent son was absorbing. The ubiquitous presence of vulgar and violent "musical" offerings disguised as Black cultural expression deeply offended me. These useless, destructive, untalented parasites and the massive money machines behind them threatened the mind of my child. They dared to invade the sacred territory of his young psyche which day after day, year after year, I had cared for and cultivated. They attacked not only an innocent boy, but me, his mother, his grandparents and his great-grandparents as well.
In the spirit of nonviolence, and in respect of this month's time for discourse and reflection, I offer this song. It is one man's protest, counsel, and thanks for the positive influences of my Black "teachers, teammates, and buddies".
I've given the words and chords below. Whether or not this is a good song is not for me to decide - I honestly don't think I am the right person to perforn this work. I encourage and will accept and post all video responses.
Peace and thanks to all.
ODE TO RAP
G - C - G - G - C - D
G - C - G - Am - C - G
There's a song about Abraham, Martin, and John
And how they left us so long before their times
These men gave us so much to believe in
But now you're tearing them to pieces with your rhymes.
You talk of life the way that you guys see it
And violent death like it was something good
You like drive-bys and smoking dope and fightin'
And say "That's just the way it goes down in the 'hood."
Why don't you stand up and be counted as a man?
Be Black and proud for all the world to see
Sing songs of strength and courage in the struggle
'Cause you're more than just the "N" word to me.
You treat your women like they're something less than human
And they take it 'cause they're all messed up too
And you know that no self-respecting person
Would hang out with a gangster punk like you.
Why don't you stand up and be counted as a man?
Be Black and proud for all the world to see
Sing songs of strength and courage in the struggle
'Cause youre more than just the "N" word to me.
The men of color I have known and have respected
You make angry, embarrassed, and sad
They're my teachers, my teammates, and my buddies
And frankly, they don't think you're very bad.
Why don't you stand up and be counted as a man?
Be Black and proud for all the world to see
Sing songs of strength and courage in the struggle
'Cause you're more than just the "N" word to me.
'Cause you're Black, you're American, and you're free.
'Cause we're all brothers and sisters and we are free.

OdeToRap posted this comment on cregen124 in response to the video "Rome's Day": It is "pending approval" which means it will probably be censored. The gist of "Rome's Day" is that Catholics and protestants are evil, non-Christians and Sunday worship is a Papal conspiracy to control the masses (pun intended). I wrote, "The warriors in the opening scenes are clearly NOT Roman. They wear the Flag of England. Others may be Templar Knights, an order DISBANDED by the Pope in the 1300s. The Catholic Church, with all its faults, has done more to promote charity and human rights than any other group in the history of mankind. Every SUNDAY, millions of dollars are collected in Catholic churches around the world to clothe and feed needy persons REGARDLESS OF THEIR FAITH in third-world places like, say, the Philippines."

@PickYourColor: Without the dedication and sacrifice of civil rights heroes such as Dr. King and Rosa Parks, there would be no freedom of speech for African Americans and therefore no rap music. The point of Ode To Rap is that, in the author's opinion, the glorification of violence, drugs, and abuse of women - all staples of the rap genre - have severely damaged the monumental progress gained by past and present black leaders. Millions of young people like you have seen these videos which portray Black America in a false and negative light. The historic postings on this channel are meant to promote awareness of the true examples of black pride.
