ORAU Science Education Play


America needs a steady supply of scientists and engineers to meet future needs in critical science and technology areas. Students in science, technology, mathematics, and engineering (STEM) fields need the skills, knowledge, and experience to stay competitive in an ever-changing global marketplace.

To address these national workforce and science education needs, ORAU provides a single resource for developing and administering high-quality, experience-based programs to fill the pipeline with the next generation of science and technology leaders.

ORAU 2013 Extreme Classroom Makeover Play

For five years ORAU has awarded a $25,000 technology makeover to one deserving 5th through 8th grade math or science teacher in the East Tennessee region. In 2013, Karla Fultz of A.L. Lotts Elementary School in Knoxville won the grand prize for her video depicting how technology could transform her classroom.

ORAU 2012 Extreme Classroom Makeover Play


Each year the ORAU Extreme Classroom Makeover contest awards a high-tech makeover to one East Tennessee math or science teacher in grades 5 through 8.

In 2012, Heather Burkhart, 5th grade teacher at Pigeon Forge Middle School in Sevier County, Tenn., along with her students created a video that won the $30,000 grand prize from ORAU. See her winning video, the ceremony announcing the grand prize, as well as the official reveal of her new classroom.

Other videos include runner up entries from Bearden Elementary School in Knoxville and Oakdale School in Morgan County.

ORAU Radiation Emergency Medicine Play


In the event of a nuclear incident, first responders as well as hospital and emergency management personnel need the knowledge and training to quickly manage and support the medical aspects of human exposure to radiation. ORAU provides practical, hands-on training for medical personnel as well as a worldwide, 24/7, deployable team of physicians, nurses, and health physicists to respond to radiation emergencies.

ORAU staff serve as a valuable resource on the medical aspects of radiation exposure for the Department of Energy as well as governments of other countries and medical professionals across the United States. This playlist highlights both the ability of our radiation emergency medicine staff to answer basic questions about radiation exposure and illness, and how they can deploy to radiation incidents like the Fukushima nuclear crisis in Japan.
