A video featuring 35028 and the VSOE around the Surrey Hills on the 17th February 2012. It has been over 7 months since I last saw 35028, that time she was on the Blackmore Vale Express, and I had varying amounts of success that day. I have wanted to visit the Surrey Hills and capture 35028 working over the 1in96 gradient from Shalford to Dorking for some time now, and the run on the 17th coincided with a day off of work.
Although I have chased around the Surrey Hills before, see my 60163 Tornado at Denbies Hill video, this was to be my first visit to all four locations.
We start this video at Egham, just after 35028 swings left from Staines. With a crowd of commuters on the opposite platform, 35028 gallops through with a whistle. I bet the commuters were surprised to see a 'steam train', let alone the Pullman set behind.
While 35028 took the scenic route around Virginia Water and Chertsey, I dashed ahead and got to Worplesdon. After 20 minutes, I assumed that the excursion had passed (and had gone straight through Byfleet, rather than stop like the timings said on the internet). Soon though, 35028s exhaust could be seen over the bridges and she charged through, with another nice whistle.
The next location was supposed to be Shere, and the bridge that crosses the line at 'Little London'. However, it wasn't to be. I was on the wrong road to get to this bridge, so instead went to the delightful station at Chilworth.
After leaving Shalford 7 minutes early, 35028 accelerates away, with her load of 12 Mk1s and the Mk 2 support coach.
I had sent my assistant to Gomshall station, to catch 35028 as she neared the summit of the 1in96. As it was, he only just made it in time. 35028 had by this stage got up to speed, and chattered through, with a short distance to go to the summit of Gomshall bank.
That concluded my first video of 35028 in the Surrey Hills, and I will no doubt be back again at some point in the not too distant future.

Part 1 of 2: With just 4 weeks left before her boiler certificate expires, 6024 King Edward I was rostered to haul the first Cathedrals Express of 2012 from London to Bristol and back. After the recent snow, this was going to be memorable run with both steam and snow.
We start 2012 off at Goring, and a bridge over the GWML. Running to time and running on the down fast, 6024 charges past with a decent smoke effect.
At South Stoke, the regulator was open as 6024 passed me. Stood in a snowy field, this is just the second time I had filmed steam in the snow.
After a 40 minute dash, I just arrived at Baulking and a field west of the main road when 6024 departed the loop at Challow. Another camera was almost set up at Uffington and another bridge, but just as my assistant arrived, 6024 burst out from under the bridge ahead and caught him out. A 40 second video was recorded, but I felt it too shaky to be included here.
Not long after, I received word that 6024 had been stopped near Swindon. The reason was unclear at the time. I then was told of a signal failure on the down line, and that the King was affected. The immediate fear was that the King had failed. In the clip from Uffington, steam can clearly be seen pouring from the air pump. Fortunately, I was informed of the signal failure, and obviously the air pump was fine.

Another archive shot, this time with 60163 Tornado. I uploaded another video from the same chase (named **Request** 60163 Tornado at Andover 17-08-11) a while ago.
This is the full clip from my camera on platform 2, as 60163 thunders through Andover with a mega whistle at 81mph (according to a GPS on the train)
For now, this is the last of the archive videos, normal videos will resume when the main line steam diary begins for 2012.

Back in early Autumn, 35005 Canadian Pacific moved from Ropley on the Mid Hants Railway to Eastleigh works, for storage and (subject to negotiations with Knights Rail) overhaul.
Running to time (to the minute), 35005 passes through Botley with 47500 leading and with 3 newly restored WCRC Mk1s in tow.
This video was supposed to be uploaded at the time, however, I never got round to it due to other commitments and chases.
Let's hope 35005 isn't out of the public eye for too much longer.

The 2012 GCR Winter Steam Gala 28-01-12
Our second visit to Great Central Railway was to coincide with their Winter Steam Gala on the 28th January 2012. Another early start was on the cards, and in the event we only just made it to Quorn in time for the first TPO mail drop demonstration.
The Winter Gala had no real theme, with locomotives varying from a BR Standard class 7 to a Drummond M7. With 10 locomotives running, this gala was certainly one not to be missed.
The full list of locomotives is below: - BR Standard Class 7MT 70013 Oliver Cromwell (making a return to the GCR after a hectic year on the main line) - SR Drummond M7 30053 (visiting from the Swanage Railway, becoming the first M7 to run on the Great Central Railway and the first M7 to haul a TPO) - Ex-LNER Robinson 04 63601 (celebrating its 100th birthday this year, the last gala before her mandatory 10 year boiler overhaul) - Ex-SR N15 (King Arthur class) 30777 Sir Lamiel - GWR 4953 Pitchford Hall (my personal favourite) - Ivatt class 2 46521 (Making a return to traffic after an overhaul, hauling her first revenue earning train with Standard 2MT 78019 - seen in the video) - Standard 2MT 78019 - LMS liveried 8F 8624 (the only 8F built for the Southern Railway left in preservation) - Ex-LMS 3F Jinty 47406 - GNR N2 1744
The event was superbly put together, with regular freight trains, regular turntable use, demonstration mail drops and the occasional double headers.
The shots featured in this video are:
- 8F 8624 reversing onto the newly installed turntable at Quorn and Woodhouse station - 4953 Pitchford Hall charging through Quorn with the first TPO of the day, passing 30777 at Kinchley Lane with the lunchtime dining train (with the Cornishman headboard, and with a good friend on board!) and finally departing Quorn (making an incredible noise and passing 78019 on the windcutter rake) - 46521 and 78019 departing Quorn (first revenue earning trip for 46521) - 46521 making a stunning noise passing Kinchley Lane - 78019 and 30777 passing 30053 (with lots of whistling) passing Kinchley Lane - 78019 accelerating through Woodthorpe with the freight train - 63601 passing Quorn and Woodhouse with the returning freight train - At the start of the Twilight event at the end of the day, the TPO is explained, as 70013 and N2 1744 pass in the background - Drummond M7 30053 puts in a fine performance past Quorn with the TPO. This is understood to be the first time that a member of the M7 class has ever hauled a TPO. - Earlier in the day, 70013 whistles past Kinchley Lane with the second TPO of the day - Around 45 minutes later, 47406 passes Kinchley Lane, with the returning TPO set then seen later at Woodthorpe with the windcutters - GNR N2 1744 accelerates through Kinchley Lane with the freight train (just as the sun comes out)
I thoroughly recommend visiting the railway, as it is a fantastic part of the country. Well done to all at the GCR who made this event so special.
It is worth noting that there were a couple of shots that were left out of this video, the first being 47406 passing Quorn, just after 4953 passed with the TPO and the second being 70013 at a small level crossing off of Fielding Road. Both fell foul of hard drive problems. My shot of 46521 and 78019 was almost a disaster too, with my external microphone running out battery around 5 minutes afterwards.
