Well, the French Quarter acts like its own jail for artist in many ways. Despite all of his human flaws, it is his artistic talent that sets him apart from the rest and that is what he would want to be judged upon for those that need to judge.

The Noel Rockmore Project takes you along with us as we try and uncover and bring recognition to a Master American artist of the last half of the 20th Century, Noel Rockmore.Country
United StatesInterests
One year after Katrina, we were helping my mom check her storage in New Orleans. Tee, my wife of 24 years, and I went down there and put on the hazmat suits and discovered over 1400 pieces by one artist, Noel Rockmore. Shirley also had 35 years worth of correspondence, brochures and news clippings. At the center of the storage were two camp chests with over 30 artbooks and 900 complete works by Noel Rockmore. Each artbook had a letter from Rockmore stressing that these were to be a private secret between Rockmore and Shirley and only revealed after his death lest any of his dealers find out. We did some research online and discovered Rockmore was the the prodigy son of two talented NYC artist, Gladys Rockmore Davis, the "10 year wonder of American Art" and Floyd Davis, a "Hall of Fame Illustrator". We then researched Noel Rockmore and found out he had made it in the art world as a young man named Noel Davis and had been part of shows at the Whitney, Met, MOMA, Butler, Pennsylvania Academy and had also been part of Joseph Hirschorn's personal collection in Washington DC. With the advent of Pollack and Jasper Johns, Noel Davis decided to go to New Orleans where he reinvented himself in 1959 as Noel Rockmore and met my mom as well as Larry Borenstein and the other founders of Preservation Hall. Rockmore then went on to an amazing prolific and produced a fantastic body of artwork, Rockmore estimates at 15,000 pieces, including 8000 oils. After seeing and documenting over 4500 works in 3 years from over 100 collectors and seeing photos of 2000 more, we think his amazing claim is accurate. For the last three years we have traveled the country meeting folks and documenting Noel Rockmores work. This is our chance to take you with us. You can email us at rich@rightwaywrongway.com and view our web site at www.rockmore.orgThanks for coming along.
