NBR005 - Twist It! - Funky Monkey
'Let's Twist It!'
That's what a young Belgian from the beautiful city of Brussels thought when he grabbed the arm of the innocent little monkey he then tortured patiently in order to get what he so desperately needed: monkey noise. At night you could see him sitting in his studio, chopping up what was recorded under such inhumane circumstances and only hours later 'Funky Monkey' was born. So what better artist name would there be for the young man than Twist It!
Being an international syndicate, we at No Brainer Records then sent parts of the monkey to Italy, where a guy codename Camel (Deadfish) put them back together using his signature house glue.
We also posted parts to snowy Norway where a certain Funkin Matt (Sound Pellegrino) managed to clone a genetically enhanced animal in his laboratories: FM² if you will.
In the meantime the remains of the little primate were treated by Canblaster
(Club Cheval) in France for some weeks. Working his mojo, he managed to destillate and manifest the spirit of the monkey into a haunting sound collage of seismic proportions.
What was left of the monkey we shipped to Sydney, Australia just to feed it to Wolfie (Sweat It Out).
I don't want to get into too much detail about how Twist It! created a 'Human Bell',
but feel free to listen if you dare.
NBR004 - Swick - Jogalani EP
This is Swick!
Today No Brainer Records serves you three tropical miniatures stuffed with a vast amount of fresh ideas, created by a young fella from Melbourne.
The question arises: Is Swick the forgotten son of
Crocodile Dundee? 'Jogalani' clearly sounds as if
he's practicing Dundee's knife routines with some bamboo sticks. 'Quandong' though rather reminds me of meditaion scenes in old Steven Seagal movies where as 'Broccoli' sounds as if it was the music
to the so called 'dance of joy' some demons traditionally do in the TV series Angel, that spin-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I know. I watch to much TV, you're right, but I listen to No Brainer Records. I'm not done yet though, cause these Swick tracks are accompanied by universe expanding reinterpretations.
Douster (Mad Decent) proves that Mexican 3ball can be fused with Gabba. Vhyce (Sweat It Out!) translates 'Jogalani' to the Tech House hipsters teaching them the 'dance of joy'. Malente (No Brainer) resizes the Original to fit a proper dancefloor. Them Jeans (Dim Mak) serves 'Broccoli' by the pound and Chaos In The CBD (Youngunz) deep fry that vegetable.
NBR003 - Klipar - Imperial March
Now it's official: It can be fun on the dark side. You just gotta turn on the discolights.
No Brainer Records' third release sees Klipar, who is one half of Zombies For Money (Trouble & Bass), push the Vader to the floor. In his version of the 'Imperial March' you can practically hear all the sun Klipar gets living in beautiful Lisbon, Portugal.
It's scary how much fun a march can be.
As an alternative the originals 'Do the Darthman' -approach, Myd (Club Cheval) delivers a truely cinematic booty shaker, adding melodies that John Williams would have loved to come up with, but didn't. You can close your mouth now, John.
But wait, maybe leave it open for just a bit longer. Until you've heard the remix of Australians Lewis CanCut (Scattermusic). A true Major Vader. Who would expect the 'Imperial March' to be the perfect soundtrack for your next limbo dance contest.
John? Anybody ?
Anyhow. The dark side wouldn't be the dark side if we wouldn't deliver some really dark mixes. Gingy (This Is Music) goes deep and techs the march up, giving us a dramatic 'Battle For Endor' remix, which causes serious damage all around.
No shit. Battles tend to do that.
Where Gingy goes battle, Sharkslayer (Top Billin) go war! Their Demon Dub is a mean thing. Sounding like R2D2 getting eaten alive by hoards of beasts so dark,
i can't even see them. So how should I be able to tell you what they look like? Well, whenever kids come up to me nowadays and ask me for my opinion on what I think would be an appropriate tune to lose ones hearing over, I recommend this one.
'And don't forget to turn off the light!'
NBR001 - MOSTON & MALENTE - Oh My God -
The launch of No Brainer Records sees the triumphant return of Moston & Malente. With a whole bunch of party smashers already under their belt, including "F*cked Up", "In The Sky" and "Do The Right Thing", the duo is back to serve up a double helping of fresh dance floor sustenance.
"Oh My God" is a true No Brainer tune with its irresistible looping vocal, mad samba whistles and bouncing groove. The original comes with a dub version and killer remixes by some of the hottest producing talent around.
First up are Chaos In The CBD, who recently earned bags of praise for their remix of French Fries' 'Senta' (Youngunz). The New Zealanders weave the vocals into a tidy tech house - gypsy groove that cannot fail. Next is Rishi Romero (Spinnin) who shows us how they tear the roof off in Amsterdam. NT89 has put out two big EPs on Southern Fried recently and his remix is a sub bass driven badboy. Milt Mortez of Discobelle fame goes whistle crazy to round things off.
Second original of the package "I Go Round" has been a stand out tune in Malente's and Lars Moston's DJ sets for the last couple of months, resulting in countless messages from fellow DJs inquiring when the hell they could have it too. So this is for you guys and girls. Enjoy the raised hands when those chords come in, smile about the vocal and do a cool head move when the beat drops like that.
On remix duty is Seductive (Dim Mak), whose remix preserves the original feeling, builds it up to the max and drops to a clever stripped down groove that's just funky as hell.
OMG what a package...
