It's just the difference in culture and slang. I'm American and if I went somewhere else there would be plenty of confusion on both sides if I were to get in a conversation. It also happens between Americans depending on what part of the country you're from.

its hard to decern what is meant by the 'American' accent. There are different accents and drawls depending on what part of America you're from and there's also the difference in slang.
