I am happy to share my life so that the younger musicians can see that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. I have played the 3 chord (trichordo) bouzouki my entire career. I am self-taught. I learned to play instruments when I was 9 years old on my island of Oinousses. I began with the violin, mandolino, oud and laouto.
I came to the United States in the early 1950s and brought a bouzouki with me. One day I put the bouzouki in a paper sack because I did not have a case for it and I went over to a club in New York and I boldly announced that I play bouzouki. In those days there were not very many in USA that played bouzouki so they hired me and put me in the back row. One week later I was brought to the front row and a year after that I was producing records. I directed the music and played bouzouki on 40-45 songs on the record label Kalos Diskos. These records were sold all over the United States and I began traveling.
On this You Tube channel you can hear some of the records I performed on and you can also hear the live shows that I also recorded back in those days. Many are from the Zappion Pavilion in New York from 1965. The music is from the 1950s all the way through to today. I still play the bouzouki and I enjoy entertaining people.
I have learned that when you are performing, you have to do your best to make sure that you acknowledge your audience. They are your biggest critic.
