I love the warm intimate feel of this recording. The audience knows every word of this song and they are enjoying every moment of this performance--they are part of it.

@bigreed43: No I didn't know there was a Liberty Legion in the Marvel universe back in the '70s. My characters are still in development, so I don't think it will be an issue.

I'm old enough to remember when the original Superman movie came out. I recall hearing at the time that the original plan was for Margot Kidder to sing the song, but it was only after she'd been cast that the producers discovered she couldn't sing. They had her recite the lyrics as a poem or dram...

Great song, great interpretation by the woman who made the song famous. My only question: Why all the stage business? Why all the messing with stuff on the shelf, folding cloth, etc.?

Extraordinary! Thank you for sharing this. I was not aware of this style or tradition of singing. I was aware of both Gregorian Chant and American style shape note singing. In a strange sort of way this style seems to partake of both of those earlier styles. Quite beautiful. Thanks again!

I've never seen anybody hold the banjo in that position before. It looks like it would be bloody uncomfortable, but obviously it works for her! :) Fine playing, that.

I didn't know Steve Martin could play clawhammer and frailing styles of banjo as well as Scruggs or bluegrass style! I'm impressed.

Great lines for a kid's show!

The way she bends the notes at the end of the lines makes her singing distinctive and haunting. There's something really powerful about the unaccompanied human voice singing a really, really ancient song.

I think it's a safe bet that Wade will be able to "go somewhere with this." The young man has a phenomenal talent, and he's wise enough to know that it comes from God. He will go far.
