There's a new single of a new band that is being played on the air on JAM 88.3 these days—"Alive" by NEVER THE STRANGERS. It's nothing you've heard before from a local band—and it does not register immediately that the song's by a local band. It is, all at once familiar yet new. It is a fond nod to the '80s New Wave's keyboard-driven music—even the lead's voice is reminiscent of The Cure's Robert Smith—wrapped in an alternative beat of the '90s and expert guitar work. There is a sense of youthful energy and joyful exuberance that the band throws into its music that is a like a breath of fresh air in the local music industry.
Never the Strangers, after all, as the band members explained their name, comes from their love for music, how it is a common thread that brings people—even strangers—together. This unabashed idealism shows the age of its members, who are all still in college at Ateneo de Manila University.
Meet NEVER THE STRANGERS ACE Libre—lead vocals and keyboards, PJ LaViña—drums and percussion, FRANCIS Victa—bassist and JP del Mundo—guitars.
Never the Strangers is a band formerly known as Leonecast—the band Ace and JP carried over from high school to college. When they realized that they are already a different band from when they had started—half of the members are new, even the band's sound has evolved—they decided to change the name to Never the Strangers.
When asked how they define their music, each member throws in: "New Wave synth rock," also "keyboard-driven rock," but they have songs that are guitar driven too—but they all agree that rock music is their main foundation, influenced by New Wave, alternative and synth.
Rico Blanco discovered them through the bands—still Leonecast then—Myspace page and their music and talent caught his attention. "Once in a while a young promising band like Never The Strangers comes along, one that has a knack for creating melodies that stick to your brain like superglue," Rico says of the band. "With lyrics that aren't bad either, they've caused me a few serious cases of LSS. This band is far from perfect—still very raw yet teeming with potential. Funny thing is the members seem clueless as to how good the band is and can be. That or they just enjoy making music and don't give a f*** about anything else."
The rest, as they say, is history.
BALANCING BOOKS WITH AN ALBUM
With their album nearly done—all the initial recording all finished, the boys are still incredulous of their current situation. They confessed that they never thought they would hear their song being played on the radio. They were happy enough with people LSS-ing (Last Song Syndrome) to "Alive" from hearing it at their gigs. Now, they are signed by Warner Music Philippines Artist Management (along with Rico Blanco, Ebe Dancel, and General Luna), and more people are hearing and singing to their song.
Now, that their sessions at the studio are nearly done, the band can go back to doing live gigs again, injecting their brand of infectious youthful energy into the local band scene. And now that they're with Warner Music and with Rico Blanco's blessing, it's safe to say that Never the Strangers is one act to watch for as it ushers in a new era of all-original, honest-to-goodness rock music in the days, months and years to come.
