NetworkNewsToday: 24 June 2010 - FilmAid International - U.N. MINUSTAH: Port-au-Prince, Haiti - The United Nations (UN) mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) along with FilmAid International set up two large screens to bring the entire World Cup live to the Stade Silvio Cator, Haiti's national stadium. Under the slogan "Antre gratis ti cheri" or "Entry is free, my dear", 10,000 free tickets are distributed daily.
Brazilian flags and used bottles coloured in green and yellow decorate the streets of Port-au-Prince, as Haitians, young and old, caught up in the ongoing World Cup fever, sport their favourite football team's jersey.
The World Cup, which kicked off last Friday in South Africa, comes just five months after the massive earthquake in Haiti that flattened the capital Port-au-Prince.
Port-au-Prince's main stadium, Stade Silvio Cator, home to thousands of displaced families, now welcomes people to watch the games on giant screens.
For 1.5 million people still displaced by the earthquake and struggling to find normalcy, football might provide a chance to distract themselves from the devastation that surrounds them.
SOUNDBITE (Creole) André Paul Antoine, President Base Tanga Sportive Club Delma 55: "After January 12, everybody is in stress, but now we are having one month of pleasure in Haiti. We still think of dead bodies, but the one who survived must continue the battle. For the world Cup Final, I would like to see in the final match Brazil against Argentina, for the worldwide and the Haitian pleasure."
SOUNDBITE (French) Stephanie Ziebelle, CVR MINUSTAH: "We are making the link between sport and youth, social cohesion and for the Haitian pleasure after the difficult moments in Haiti after the earthquake." ..... ( UNITED NATIONS STABILIZATION MISSION IN HAITI: UN MINUSTAH ) ....

NetworkNewsToday: 06July 2010 - UNTV: United Nations, New York - Addressing the United Nations (UN) for the first time in more than 50 years, Queen Elizabeth II today (6 July) lauded the world body for its many achievements, while exhorting it to continue playing its lead role in the cause of peace and prosperity for all.
Queen Elizabeth is the Head of State of 16 of the UN's 192 Member States and head of the Commonwealth of 54 countries. She last addressed the General Assembly in 1957 at the age of 31, four years after she was crowned queen.
Calling her "a living symbol of grace, constancy and dignity," UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his gratitude for the Queen's dedication to the common values embodied by the UN.
In her address to the General Assembly, the Queen highlighted some of the UN's achievements, including helping to reduce conflict, offering humanitarian assistance to millions of people affected by natural disasters and other emergencies, and tackling the effects of poverty in many parts of the world.
"In my lifetime, the United Nations has moved from being a high-minded aspiration to being a real force for common good. That of itself has been a signal achievement," the British monarch, who was accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip, told the General Assembly.
Prior to arriving in New York, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Canada for a nine-day royal tour of the country.

NetworkNewsToday: 07 July 2010 - UNTV: United Nations, New York - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (7 July) at UN Headquarters, on the heels of his meeting with United States (US) President Barack Obama at the White House where the two leaders discussed ways to advance to direct talks between the Israeli and Palestinian authorities.
UN officials have welcomed the additional measures recently announced by Israel in increasing the scope and quantity of materials allowed into Gaza, voicing their hope that the move will help address the needs of the 1.5 million Palestinians living in the territory.
The Secretary-General, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, also noted the agreement to facilitate the immediate start of the construction of 12 UN education and health facilities.
"The Secretary-General has long called for a significant shift in strategy towards meeting the great needs of Gaza's population," said the statement. "Further steps must now follow to meet those needs and to allow the United Nations to accelerate and expand its efforts."
Ban, the Special Coordinator and other senior UN officials have repeatedly called for ending the blockade against Gaza, which Israel imposed on the territory for what it called security reasons after Hamas, which did not recognize Israel's right to exist, ousted the Fatah movement in the Strip in 2007. ..... The details will follow later but it is for a new program of 2 years"
Sharapova said that it was important for youth to have an active healthy lifestyle.
SOUNDBITE (English) Maria Sharapova, UNDP Goodwill Ambassador: "The donation will go to, we're just thinking about how we want to be involved with sports and that's obviously the root of what I do and I really believe that that's really important in these environments. And one of the most important things for me is to get the children to be active and to go outside and play sports."
The UNDP Goodwill Ambassador met with the 2009 winners of a UNDP/ Maria Sharapova Foundation scholarship programme for students coming from the contaminated Chernobyl regions, and played tennis with young Byelorussians.
The UNDP projects aim to provide new opportunities for young people in Gomel and improve living conditions for their communities.
Sharapova was born in 1987 in Nyagan, Siberia, after her family fled Gomel in the wake of the Chernobyl accident. After two years in Nyagan, the family moved to the Black Sea town of Sochi, Russia. In 1995 Sharapova left Russia to study tennis in the United States, going on to win three Grand Slam titles.
In partnership with UNDP, the Sharapova Foundation supported seven youth-oriented projects in areas of Belarus, the Russian Federation, and Ukraine affected by the Chernobyl accident; and funds a five-year scholarship programme for students coming from the contaminated regions.
