About this user
Dr. Brent Nelsen is a devoted educator, church leader, husband and father. He was raised in a home dedicated to education: his mother taught elementary school, his father preached in Baptist churches before becoming a university professor. Brent graduated from WheatonCollege where he played football and ran the high hurdles for the track team. After Wheaton, Brent did his post-graduate work in political science and economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to conduct
research in Norway.
For over 20 years Brent has studied and taught politics and economics-of the United States and countries around the world-at Furman University in Greenville. He frequently takes students to observe and experience politics in Washington, D.C., Brussels, London, Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, Hanoi, Beijing, and St. Petersburg, among other places. The books and articles he has published have focused on public policy, religion and politics in the global economy.
Considered a political and policy expert, he often serves as the on-camera political analyst for WYFF Channel 4 in the Upstate and contributes frequently as an expert to the opinion pages of South Carolina newspapers.
From 2003 to 2009 Brent served as chair of the Department of Political Science at Furman, with its 21 faculty members and over 270 student majors. Brent currently serves as President of the South Carolina Political Science Association and past president of Christians in Political Science, an organization of professional political scientists from a variety of Christian traditions. As a leader in his profession, Brent has not only enjoyed teaching and studying politics, but has been recognized for his work as a scholar and administrator.
Brent has made a career out of preparing the minds of our future leaders. Most importantly, he understands the type of education system that fully prepares young people to take on the challenges of life after high school. As the next Superintendent of Education, Brent will draw on his experience and knowledge of what makes a successful education system to ensure that the future leaders of this state are prepared for our 21st century economy.
