Phoebe Hoban, author of Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art, will read from and discuss her new biography of painter Alice Neel. Alice Neel: The Art of Not Sitting Pretty was named one of the ten best books of 2010 by the Village Voice, included in O Magazine's 15 books to watch for in 2011, and picked as an Editors' Choice in the New York Times Sunday Book Review in January 2011. Charles Bukowski, bautizado como Heinrich Karl Bukowski (Andernach, 16 de agosto de 1920 - Los Ángeles, 9 de marzo de 1994), fue un escritor y poeta estadounidense, aunque nacido en Alemania. A menudo fue erróneamente asociado con los escritores de la Generación Beat, debido a sus similitudes de estilo y actitud. La escritura de Bukowski está fuertemente influida por la atmósfera de la ciudad donde pasó la mayor parte de su vida, Los Ángeles. Bukowski fue un autor prolífico, escribió más de cincuenta libros, incontables relatos cortos y multitud de poemas. Murió de leucemia en 1994, a la edad de 73 años. Hoy en día es considerado uno de los escritores estadounidense más influyentes y símbolo del "realismo sucio" y la literatura independiente. Bukowski ha sido traducido a más de una docena de idiomas, incluidos español, francés, alemán y portugués. Es visto como ícono de la decadencia estadounidense y de la representación nihilista característica después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Su falta de ambición y compromiso con él y con el resto del mundo, convierten a este escritor en una de las influencias de innumerables autores contemporáneos. En 1985, Barbet Schroeder (Barfly, La virgen de los sicarios, Terror's Advocate) se plantó en casa de Bukowski y rodó 64 horas de conversación con el autor de Factotum, Música de cañerías y La senda del perdedor. De todo ese metraje, se editaron 52 entrevistas cortas en las que ambos hablan del alcohol, de la violencia, de las mujeres y de otros tantos asuntos. "The Charles Bukowski Tapes" es considerado hoy día un clásico de culto. Y en esta oportunidad, y por primera vez, este clásico es presentado subtitulado al español, gentileza de la casa. He aquí al gran Buk, botella en mano, más íntimo y verborrágico que nunca.

1837 war in Wien ein zweirädriges Schienenfahrzeug als Hilfsfahrzeug für Bahnarbeiter erfunden worden, das auf einer Schiene lief und mit den Füßen abgestoßen wurde, also sehr der damals seit zwanzig Jahren bekannten Drais'schen „Laufmaschine" ähnelte. Deshalb wurde der Name Draisine für alle schienengebundenen Hilfsfahrzeuge übernommen. Das zweispurige mechanisch angetriebene Gefährt, das sich dann einzig für diesen Zweck durchsetzte, geht dagegen wirklich auf Karl Drais zurück. 1842 erprobte er ein solches Fahrzeug in Karlsruhe mit Genehmigung der Staatseisenbahn. Der Antrieb erfolgte über eine Mechanik, die die Mitfahrenden mit ihren Füßen betätigten. Später bauten sich Eisenbahnarbeiter aus alten Fahrrädern teilweise abenteuerliche Gefährte für diese Aufgabe. Auch Fahrradfirmen wie Seidel & Naumann stellten Draisinen her. In Europa werden in mehreren Ländern stillgelegte Eisenbahnstrecken für den Fremdenverkehr mit Draisinen befahren. In Deutschland gab es 2009 30 Strecken mit rund 450 Schienenkilometern, die mit der Draisine befahren werden können. In der Regel werden Fahrten im Vermietbetrieb auf stillgelegten Eisenbahnstrecken angeboten. Bei den Fahrzeugen werden entweder Handhebeldraisinen oder einfache Fahrraddraisinen angeboten.
A draisine primarily refers to a light auxiliary rail vehicle, driven by service personnel, equipped to transport crew and material necessary for the maintenance of railway infrastructure.
The eponymous term is derived from German Baron Karl Christian Ludwig Drais von Sauerbronn, who invented his Laufmaschine (German for "running machine") in 1817, that was called Draisine (German) or Draisienne (French) by the press. It is the first reliable claim for a practically used bicycle, basically the first commercially successful two-wheeled, steerable, human-propelled machine commonly called a velocipede, nicknamed hobby-horse or dandy horse.
Later, the name draisine came to be applied only to versions used on rails and was extended to similar vehicles, even when not human-powered. Because of their low weight and small size, they can be put on and taken off the rails at any place, allowing trains to pass.
