I have the lip resting above the surface of the bass. But, i have thought about bringing the whole thing down a little....why? Does it make a difference?

yeah i routed a hole in my bass for the tremolo it wasnt very hard

Why not? A shim is no bid deal, and a lot of basses have them from the factory.

Napolean dude, in refrence to my Kahler, that one is surface mounted, with the smaller neccessary rout.
I have one on another bass, which I had trouble with, but if they are bolt on basses, instead of countersinking, you can shim the neck pocket to raise the neck up, and get more uplift out of the saddles, its an easy job. Any more questions, you know where to find me! :)
