The Love of Truth and Wisdom

Philosophy is the love of truth and wisdom for their own sake. The word Philosophy is composed of two old greek words: the prefix philo and the word sophie. Sophie means wisdom and philo means love of. Philosophy is more of an attitude and method than a settled subject matter.

Guided by the goal of truth, Philosophy is associated with ruthless logic and the attitude of following the argument where it goes, even if this leads to embarrassment or disadvantage. It is characterized by imaginative and pioneering new views and the critical examinations of those assumptions we most take for granted. The major advances in the sciences are taken by philosophically inclined thinkers. Philosophy has given us all the other subjects and is important for the growth of new knowledge and civilization.
