The New Zealand men's hammer scene is still looking for the successors of Angus COOPER and Phillip JENSEN , but things are getting better and a group of young throwers is building up. It will need time to get some of them over 60 , 65 or even 70m , but building a hammer thrower takes time. In Hamilton Ryan TINKLE, the best of them, had a last chance to go for the NZL M19 6kg record but could not do better than 63,12m . Alex FAFEITA had another bad day over speeding in his turns entries. Damian SMUTS still needs more confidence and a more consistent technique to get to 60m. The good news came from Warren BUTTON , a new comer from Hamilton who is now throwing over the 50m line , Adam MILLER who had his 1st comp ever with the 7kg and will be also throwing soon over this distance and the young (under 16y) Matthew BLOXHAM who got another PB with the 5kg 52,78m. The organizers were happy to have Valerie ADAMS competing in this 2012 Porritt meet and the NZL shot put star made her usual show but did not attract many of a good number of the spectators which were in the stadium . In spite that she was not "disturbed" she threw less than in Christchurch and had to satisfy with 20,19m with the 2nd thrower 8m back. The men shot put was a bit better but Tom WALSH looked somehow missing his usual fighting spirit and could not get over the 18m line . The only good performances came from Adam MILLER with a new 16,67m PB with the 6kg and Tim GIRLING Mac LEAN with a 5kg throw of 15,62m. DP

This was probably so far the best women hammer competition this season in New Zealand with excellent conditions . (The hammer throwers just love the Hamilton circle and appreciate the friendly and competent judges team) . Julia RATCLIFFE with her 2nd best ever throw of 62,09m is more and more looking to be a possible 65m thrower . She should do well at the World juniors next july where consistency over 60m will possibly open a place in the top 8 . Nicole BRADLEY won her match with Millie Mc NIE for the 2nd place with both girls in PB form and achieving both their 2nd best ever performances . Ella PILKINGTON has been clearly improving her delivery and set a new W17 Auckland record with 51,57m with the 3kg implement . She fouled an even longer throw and 55m is not out of her reach now. Elizabeth GRAY is still much of a beginner , but with help of her coach Kevin BRADLEY she will certainly progress fast and reinforce the New Zealand sub elite group . She has clearly the potential for that. DP

Perfect conditions for this competition and good performances . Stewart FARQHUAR did look very good with an opening 80,85m throw but could get the big one he is looking after . Ben LANGTON BURNELL also started well with another PB 69,52m and only a short step now from the 70m . Even the decathlete Nicholas GERRARD with his erratic technique got a new PB 54,18m. The women were not so brilliant as this event is in the moment the weakest throwing event in New Zealand with nobody throwing even close to 50m . Emily BAKER has got EVERYTHING to become a really good javelin thrower and she has the potential to throw at 55 / 60m level the day she will really focus on the event and work on the right technique . heptathlete Sarah COWLEY was not looking good technically and needs to work again on her javelin control and delivery . Katokakala SULI seems to have the good arm to get over 40m but a good arm is not enough to throw really far ! .DP

The hammer throw is certainly the most "funny" of all the throwing events . Therefore it is a pity that for understandable safety reasons and lack of coaches knowledge , it is not more practiced in schools and clubs . It is not a real problem to build "safe" rubber hammer and not really difficult to learn the one turn proper foot work . Anyways at North Harbour , with coaching help of Millie Mc NIE , the juniors are lucky to have access to the hammer throw and they do not only enjoy it but they are already showing quite good techniques . Out of Mackenzie VITASOVICH and Sarah DOYLE the NZ schools champion and vice champion , the young Anthony NOBILO is really looking good and could be even able to throw over 50m with the 2kg implement when he will get his 3rd turn right .
