Years ago when I spent time in the Chat Room world and found myself missing New Orleans since I did not live there at the time I'd tell other chatters about it. It must have been spring because I was missing badly the smell of Sweet Olive. And I was remembering that street by the old Whole Foods on Esplanade, next to True Brew. The house with the wonderful gardens that when in bloom had the most delicious scent I'd ever breathed. So that night missing my old home town, unable to locate the aroma of Jasmine or Sweet Olive in Salt Lake City I took the crowd on a virtual tour of new orleans. We "rented" an old school bus and drove to the city. Everyone added to the story, one woman made herself the Bus driver, another the hood ornament and another chose to wear spiked heels even though I warned her against it since I was taking them to ride the rides at the Beach.
We began on that street off Esplanade...Ponce de leon....I'd lived several times in that white building next to Whole Foods...it somehow always had an apartment available when I returned to the city for an extended visit.
And I tried to describe the smell and knew I'd failed for how do you describe the delicious aroma that causes you to swoon as you know without a doubt that if there is a Heaven surely it must smell this luscious. BUT I could smell it as I described it that night, I could smell it because I went there so often just to inhale the scents that filled that little street when I still lived in the city.
That virtual trip was almost like being there. We had an absolule blast as one creative mind after another joined in and created the story as we "lived" it.
We had beignets, and attended a king cake party and went to a parade.
I went to sleep that night with the scent of my city all around me and slept like a baby.
And now that I've finally found my way to you tube I hope to bring alive still more of those memories.
I'm delighted that so many are enjoying the new orleans tales...and amazed how many of us were touched by this wonderful place to grow up and share these memories.
