About Me:
In 2004 Ohio legislation was passed which placed sole permitting/regulating authority in the hands of one state department whereas in the past localities could place restrictions on whether gas/oil industry was appropriate in highly populated residential areas. Despite much opposition from citizens and local leaders all but 12 permits have been approved in the last 5 years resulting in 1000's of wells placed in highly inappropriate areas such as 100 ft from residences and schools. Our ultimate goal is to improve gas/oil regulations in Ohio, but along the way we are finding it equally important to educate citizens and municipalities on what risks to expect and prepare for while Ohio allows the industry to operate with little to no health/safety or environmental regulations.
Many of us were affected by the 2007 'Bainbridge incident' which occurred as a result of a local gas and frack company's alledged negligent drill site operations. One house exploded (demolished) while numerous others still waver between being at 100% explosive levels today and all are still without well water as it is contaminated.
Some of us have been victims of the mandatory pool law which gives the State of Ohio the authority to order your property included in a drilling tract without your consent and without due process. In one example, a well is proposed to be directionally drilled less than 200 feet from a number of citizens homes who are opposed to having a well in the neighborhood.
Some of us live on a street that experienced a leak of gas from a drill rig 1/2 mile away (2,600 feet). According to Dept of Health and environmental monitoring reports hydrogen sulfide entered homes in the summer when the windows were open. At least one family was sent to the the ER at 3:00 a.m. Luckily no one died. That week, people on the street suffered nose bleeds, debilitating headaches, chemical bronchitis, and muscle spasms.
NEOGAP believes it is essential to establish reasonable regulations for gas well drilling in Ohio to protect workers, residents and the environment. Our research shows that numerous other states have already implemented better regulations for this very reason.
