About this user

From the very earliest age I was exposed to what would later be some very interesting cars. My very earliest memories are of literally as the slogan goes "My father's Oldsmobile". My father worked for our local bank from about 1920 to the start of WW II, then worked the security detail at the ordnance plant during the war because he was too old for service. After the war he went into the automobile business, selling Oldses and Cadillacs for the A&H Olds/Cadillac dealership in Waco, TX from 1947 to 1949. I can remember as a five year old when he replaced his used 1947 Olds station wagon from the car lot with a brand new tan 1949 98 Olds four-door sedan demonstrator. I loved the sound of the brand new Rocket V-8 and the sound the Hydra-Matic transmission made in reverse. Later in '49, my father began selling Buicks and would do so until he became ill at the end of '57 with lung cancer and passed away in March of '58 when he was only 59.

I got my love of Cadillacs from my parents best friends Ross and Olna Sams. Ross grew his father's church furniture business, founded in 1899 when Ross was 1, to be the largest manufacturer of church furniture in the world L. L. Sams & Sons Church Furniture. He began driving Cadillacs after WW II. The first one I remember is a black '47, watching him fill its gas tank at the station across the street from church. In '51, we went to California in Olna's brand new '51 Series 62 sedan. Their next car was a black '52 Fleetwood with add-on AC. Ross would come over to the house and when he would leave, he'd back down our long driveway with the engine revving in the tight ratio reverse, which I loved. He'd position the right rear wheel in the gutter and I'd get out of the car. He'd put it in "Dr", floor the accelerator and throw rocks and trash all over the place and look back over the seat laughing!
