There are infrastructure needs that transcend regions and require strategic statewide solutions. We must strengthen the maintenance of our existing roadways, improve public transportation networks, expand bicycle and pedestrian routes, and support greater broadband connectivity. This kind of multi-faceted transportation system is what people look for when making the decision where to move or where to relocate a business.
The funding we have to invest in our transportation infrastructure to address these needs is insufficient. In 2014, we identified more than $70 billion in infrastructure needs over the next 10 years with only $1.5 billion in funding – clearly not enough money to pay for it all. We must find a way to fund investments in all modes of transportation and be prepared to address emerging trends, such as fuel efficient/alternative fuel vehicles and light rail systems. If we don’t invest in the solutions in the video as part of Governor McCrory's 25-Year Vision, we risk delays in the delivery of goods and services, inefficiencies in the movement of freight, and lost time due to congestion during daily commutes.
