I have published a new book - "How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs: For High School Students." It is available for sale on Amazon.com

"This book is written for high school students and beginners. It avoids using complicated grammar. The examples are kept simple. In many cases the hieroglyphs are "unrolled" - each hieroglyphic word is presented to the student one hieroglyph at a time, just as we write an English word one letter at a time. Each hieroglyph is treated as if it were a letter. This makes it much easier for the beginning student. Volume 1 consists of a series of simple lessons which when completed will enable the student to read many simple hieroglyphic sentences and significant parts of more complex sentences. The grammar presented is "Middle Egyptian" which is the most common version taught. It is not necessary to have previously studied any other foreign language. In many ways, learning ancient Egyptian will be easier for the student who has never studied a foreign language before."

It is, unfortunately, in German and has long been out of print but it is the most extensive Egyptian hieroglyphic dictionary ever published. Fortunately, there are many free on-line German to English dictionaries one can use to look up English translations.

For those of you who are beginning a study of the language, and are comfortable reading college level textbooks, I recommend the following:

Sorry, but I've not run across any other ancient Egyptian Grammar books for the layman that I can recommend. This is unfortunate, inasmuch as there is nothing inherently difficult in learning the language.

Probably the best advice I can give to anyone studying the language for the first time is to not pay too much attention to pronunciation of words. We don't know, and will never know, how ancient Egyptian was actually spoken anywhere in ancient Egypt. We do know that it was spoken differently in different parts of Egypt and, like all spoken languages, changed significantly over time.

I hope you enjoy the videos. Learning the alphabet will go a long way towards learning the language.

Eventually, I hope to create a series of entry level videos on the grammar as well.

You may have noticed I've deleted the personal stuff about me. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough space to fit the above references into the limited amount of space available.

It was mostly pretty boring anyway.
