About Muslim Feminist: Shaista Gohir
Seeing Muslim women's minds, bodies and lives being controlled troubles me deeply. Women are viewed as inferior even though hierarchy in Islam is based on piety and not gender. These social attitudes stem from negative and disempowering rulings by many (although not all) male religious scholars. I therefore plan to deliver a series of lectures exploring the sources of their judgments to show that Muslim societies are being guided towards men's opinions about how women should behave and not towards 'divine will of God.' I encourage groups to play these to their members followed by a debate on what they have heard. I am also available to deliver lectures via Skype globally.
