Over the years, television company's like the BBC wanted to save money. tape was a new medium and was expensive. These company's decided to re-use some of the tapes, taping over show that were thought no good anymore. Because of this episodes of shows like Top of the Pops and Ready Steady Go! are now missing believed wiped, or are on poor quality film from a cheap process called "Telerecording (Kinescope)" in which a black and white film camera was pointed at a large screen and filmed the video tape playing. This didn't just happen to music programmes, the ground breaking benny hill show had its first 5 or so years wiped, the earliest surviving show is from 1958 even though it started in 1951.

These days however this practice is no longer needed as everything is switching to digital.
