Made to be enjoyed on a cold day, with a wood fire blazing and a glass of port to hand. This song is part of a cluster of tracks at the end of the Song For You album that together make up one of the best concept pieces ever. It really needs to be listened to in the context of the album.

I always found it odd that this rocker who supported Joe Cocker on tour could write songs that the Carpenters would record. Just shows that image is not everything and that Richard Carpenter could pick a good tune.

Interesting attention to detail in the re-enactment scenes that show Owen guns and Italian 105mm howitzers in action. Both these items were withdrawn from use about a year after Long Tan and it would have been very easy for them to have been omitted from the modern filming.

@Nashmaster14 It's an Irish bagpipe being played @ 1:50. As you can see, it is played sitting down and has a lighter, reedier tone than the Scottish bagpipe. This instrument is heard on Art Garfunkel's "Watermark" album, featuring the talents of The Chieftans.

This is the sort of power music that the 1970's kicked off with. Somehow, it all seemed to degenerate into Jackson 5, Osmonds, ABBA and disco in a few short years. If only we could have had more of this, the 70's would not be so scorned now.
