I have seen one deleted scene here on YouTube that I wish they had kept. Helen has her hair cut by Mr Brocklehurst. That is a real powerful scene that would have made Helen more distinct. If it would have made her more like the Helen in the novel is a matter of interpretation, though.

Certainly more dignified. In 2011 it is very awkward, which I think is good. They are not as respectful towards Rochester.

I honestly find the whole issue somewhat annoying. Does it really matter?
There is one reason why she should not "give in" in this situation and that is because she might get pregnant. Otherwise it is a none-issue. It is a story about passion against both law and conventions and how s...

The story actually follows the novel very well.
Those who insists of this being a Christian metaphore, or a story advocating Victorian moral standards will not be satisfied but then they have probably not read the book very carefully.
Or else they have not understood how it related to the standa...

I think I must also say that I too was very impressed by the separation scene in 2011. That was in a way even more daring than this. I have not seen any other separation scene that really gets as close to the intentions in the novel. This one (2006) takes a creative hold of the stor...

@MsSilentia And the novel is very passionate in a physical way. Whith only today's cultural litteracy it is not easy to recognize all those erothic symbols. But the fact that the novel was considered morally dangerous might be a clue to what it said in Victorian age.

@agglebag As far as I understand, WWS is more a kind of comment on those very colonialistic ideas that prevailed in Brontë's time and whose she of course was a part of. I am not sure Brontë really meant to say that slave-blood was tainted. It is not even sure she meant Bertha had slave-blood. The...

I must read the book. This feels like a story about killing a person and replacing her with a mecanical doll... I believe (hope) most of those who dream about a Mr Rochester would not want him in real life. We have better men to chose among these days :D

Stephens' Rochester was not totally true to the character - more a kind of man that would apply to modern ideals. The western nations have historically played a not very honourable part in breaking down foreign societies that are quite chaotic nowadays.
