This video will illustrate how to use the concepts explained in chapter 2 of They Say/I Say to write an effective summary. There are two primary concepts to keep in mind when writing a summary. First, the summary must be respectful of the author. Peter Elbow recommends playing what he calls "The Believing Game" in order to do this. The Believing Game asks you to imagine that you hold the author's viewpoints and remove any of your own opinion. This can help you remain unbiased. Second, the summary must fit within the overall focus of your essay. In order to do this, you need to have a draft of your thesis statement before you begin. For the rest of the video, we will discuss how to summarize George F. Will's "Reality Television: Oxymoron." We will use the following thesis to guide our summary: George F. Will is right that reality television can be voyeuristic, but he overlooks the benefits of understanding another person's life, which these shows can offer. Now, let's look at four steps to writing an effective summary. First, list all of the important points from the article. In this case, we might note that Reality TV is demeaning Fear Factor and Jackass are imitations of foreign shows Adults and children are indistinguishable from each other Some entertainment is "bad" because if weakens society A willing audience shouldn't justify degrading content/shows Next, we need to eliminate any points that include your opinion. Here, we would need to cut the first point. Will would probably agree with that idea, but his focus is more on the viewers. Third, eliminate any points that focus on detail, not overall argument. Summaries should not get bogged down in unnecessary details or examples. This means the information about specific shows is not appropriate for the summary. Finally, eliminate any points that do not relate to your thesis/argument. The point about adults and children is not relevant to an evaluation of the article. Now write a summary paragraph that: Identifies Will's overall thesis Gives the two details from my list Includes a relevant quotation. Remember that the summary should not include any of your own opinion. Save that for the evaluation section of your essay.
