@fungusmaximus1 - That's an awful lot of steps: 1) nitration of benzene 2) reduction of nitrobenzene 3) Conversion of amine to diazonium 4) Conversion to aryl bromide. 4 steps as opposed to one is going to hit the yields awfully hard, not to mention the bloody purifying of the intermediates!

Granted it will increase reaction times but as halogens are slightly ring deactivating the lower temperatures should favour substitution of benzene and not of bromobenzene. @myst32YT - was the initial distillation step necessary? Couldn't you just have used the sep funnel to seperate the layers and then washed the chloroform layer with brine to pull out the water, acetone and acetic acid?

@ytmachx - Given that acetone is highly miscible with water, couldn't you have just washed the chloroform with water several times to get rid of the acetone? Then it would just be standard procedure to dry the chloroform of any residual water.

That distillation apparatus should be sealed if possible, benzene being a carcinogen and all. And it doesnt look especially well ventilated where you are.

@gigogrozni - I assume you were making phenylacetic acid to make phenylacetone? If so, would it not be easier to use ethanoic acid (after it's been deprotonated) and benzyl magnesium chloride? The dihydro compound formed after workup would rapidly equilibrate back to phenylacetone. Not tried this...
