I liked the Stones and folk music when I was a kid. Then one Sunday morning around 1970 we were forced to clean up at a beer party the teens threw the night before. Someone left Van Morrison "Moon Dance" behind on the turn table and we played side one what seemed for hours that afternoon ... the parents never learned of the drunken debauchery that ensued the night before ...indeed, that monumental "In Rock" of a good time was had by all! ..including us tweens, the forced labor.Rock n' roll was the dying world religion back then requiring the vigor of youth to focus a great deal of attention not to grow up (it was an art form back then). The ritual of getting one last summer from life before going to work (or elsewhere?) was the way it was in the world church of rock n roll (a vibe that will be celebrated from this day until kingdom come.)
With the Holy Trinity of Hendrix, Morrison & Janis passing in 1970 ...so did rock n roll - Deep Purple leaped ahead by the early 70's of pop rock music in my ears.
I soon got relocated to a backwater town where pop music was considered graff. I don't want to knock it but my friends and I would kick it under a shade tree and to listen to music from the window of my and forever grateful for friends 427/4 speed 68' Camaro's ...we'd talk about how Ritchie and Keith's shit was going down. I'm talking DP's "Machine Head", "In Rock", "Japan", "Storm Bringer" or The Stones "Love Ya" Live". ' That's not to say I weren't aware of Lou Reed, Patti Smith and the Ramones at the time. Without a doubt the the poets and visionaries of the post rock apocalyptic period. We were wood freaks who then needed gear like strings and guitars for our monastic life in the Ozark's backwater.
We got to college and we were practically treated like "hicks" and probably were. Other bands played top 40 while we jammed to the Stones, "Sympathy For Devil" and Sabbath, "Paranoid". A couple other garage bands hated us, the pigs haunted us and our few fans loved us. Geographically, we were at the crossroads so the pro bands frequented the roadhouse gig in a street of college juke joints and crashed in farm houses outside of town. For the most part we rocked in a boring prairie town as the last days of the the 1970's came to a screeching climax.
Now days it' seems all I can do to throw a guitar and amp in the car and drive out to sing at a salad bar, jam in a basement or lay down some basic tracks for a song somewhere. So I admire anyone who's kept their musical chops up and survived the past 30 years. I wish there was more music in the air and musicians didn't feel the pressure they needed a million dollars, fame and a tour bus to achieve self actualization.. For a long time there had been to much snobbery in music to allow anything organic to nurture itself. If it weren't for the truck stop bands in the Midwest we would have lost our musical souls. To many genre's of music diced out of flesh and bone, face, hair and make up. To many folks developing a solo career for themselves crashing the vibe and the friendships along the way ...and so it goes ...long live Rock N Roll~
