I don't think that is his point. To me it seems more like he is describing how much time was having to be divided between the band and his career, not so much being "self-righteous", but elaborating on why it wasn't working to divide attention.

you read wrong. Paul has been quoted as saying him and carlos were close on a "spiritual level". and daniel only knew sam as a friend and that's how they replaced greg with him, not sure about the other members, but you can't really be a band without being friends on some levels.
