I used Sony Vegas for my early videos. I guess, depending by the video and effects you want to use Sony Vegas is reliable. It just takes lots of time for rendering and often to preview the project.
What I like better Sony Vegas than After Effects is that S.V. has a better display for all the functions and more space in the timeline, but, of couse S.V. doesn't have all the features that A.E. has.
Now, I passed to Mac so I use mostly Final Cut Pro.
The problem with Sony Vegas is the same for every Windows programs: it crashes.
However, Movie Maker isn't free !
