@samuelli117 The escape slides can often be detatched from the airplane and used as life rafts in case of a landing on water, those side bits will help stability in rougher water and possibly, I'm not 100% sure, be used as covered compartments to provide some shelter.

@skydive911 They fold out because technically these are Krueger flaps and not slats.

@TheMechengr Yes, the main engines have they're own electrical generators. The APU would not normally be running during flight.

@mymbe430 Not quite, one engine is run at about 75% and the other at 25%, then the other way round. The brakes hold the aircraft, the chocks aren't right up against the wheels, they're about an inch away.
