Several reasons why it's difficult to understand what the song is about.
First, it was written in a time when it was hip to only show glimpses of a story and let the listener fill in the rest.
Two, Lenard Cohen wrote over 80 verses to this song. Wainwright got Cohen to fax them to him and Wainwr...

Well, Leonard Cohen (who wrote it) said that it needed a rest. I really like the song, but I regret that it was used in Shrek. kinda' ruined it for me.
