Like all the gang in the Buena Vista Social Club, Ochoa seldom falls short of perfection. Their rendering of just this one folk song ought to be put on to one CD - I for one cannot imagine growing tired of the subtleties and variety such a disc might contain.

To think that this man in his 90s can produce such a delicate, sensitively, 'felt' rendering on the piano, makes one wonder what I might have heard if I had gone to Cuba in the late 1950s (when I just had to chance to) to hear this genius in his prime.

@rataylor99 Absolutely right. I used to go to hear Edmundo Ros in the 1950s (when I'd saved up enough from my fabulous wage packet from Schweppes!). He never specialised in the 'in your face' interpretations of the kind Prado made his own. Ros respected the music - and its composer. Dipak Nandy

This is one of the most difficult Latin-American songs to play (it needs almost a concert pianist to play ALL the notes!). Trust Ruben Gonzalez to do it with a lifetime's experience behind every gesture.

Refreshing change to have an Amerindian rather than a Spanish-American voice singing this lovely song. Tell-tale clues? Spanish speakers habitally pronounce 'yo' as 'jo', and 'voz' as 'voth'. And what a beautiful and accomplished voice. Dipak Nandy
