About this user

Chevy T. (originally Todd) Metcalf is an acoustic guitarist born and based in Brisbane, Australia. His history of 25 years with the instrument stems from mostly Heavy Metal roots and formative influences such as early Metallica, Guns N Roses and soloists including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler. He also credits the enormous early influence of songwriters Bob Dylan and Neil Young. The latter he cites as having the most impact on his technique and training throughout his adolescence before moving, like Neil, (from a white Jackson Pro.) to a black Gibson Les Paul powered by either Crate or Marshall amps and exploring a wide range of tones and effects provided by Boss. Chevy is largely self-trained with only rudimentary comprehension and fluency in classical, written composition and rarely attempts traditional finger-picking techniques as a result of learning solely with a plectrum- a decision he regrets very much and advises all young guitarists to avoid. After many years at electric guitar in several unknown heavy rock bands, he returned to College at the turn of the Century where he first studied traditional Music and Photography and was subsequently awarded for academic excellence in both and encouragement to pursue further Tertiary study in performance and production. This period inspired a return to basic, minimalist instrumentation and he soon returned to a single Classical, nylon-string Fender. His lack of finger-style ability became a source of much frustration and several years later he began to once-more favour a steel-stringed acoustic guitar, although working professionally as a live stage hand and local crew member at stadiums throughout the South-East Queensland region saw very little attention to his own playing for many years. With a dinstinct, persistent loyalty and appreciation for Ibanez guitars, resulting from professional experience and an increased interest in the work of virtuosos such as Joe Satriani and Steve Vai (among many others), Chevy was extremely pleased to discover the AEL range of acoustic/electric guitars as they became available and, in 2009, purchased what he now considers his ultimate instrument. His continued minimalist philosophy concerning equipment; preferring only the guitar itself and a Direct Input for live amplification, Chevy has foregone all previous accessories and effects to rely solely on the guitar he affectionately refers to as "Ivy". A singular exception is the pending inclusion of a "stomp-box" to provide greater rhythmic dynamics and stage presence and complement the guitar. With a view to potential collaboration with a suitable vocalist, Chevy has amassed a substantial catalogue of original compositions that remain largely unknown and are yet to be recorded in audio form. The very low-quality home-made videos and improvisational practise footage available on this page are currently the only material available to the public. He applies equal attention to writing complete original compositions for solo guitar and improvisation of blues, jazz and an eclectic variety of genres. Purposely ignoring the temptation to produce inferior demo recordings on home equipment, he maintains a strong desire to do so under the guidance of one of Brisbane's premiere producers, Stephen Bartlett of White Horse Audio. While not practising and composing, he is largely focused on discovering a potentially perfect vocalist/s to accompany his unique style of writing, however, feels equally confident performing as a soloist or in collaboration. Chevy also spends some time photographing and reviewing local music groups and artists on a recreational basis and is interested in exploring other creative endeavours in this capacity on a more professional basis in future.
