About Me:

I seem to have decided to continue using this YouTube channel as more of a personal vlog and for random bits of business. However, the cooking shows have pretty much moved over to Blip.TV. Why? Because they pay. Not very much, but something, and they don't nitpick me on stuff every time I try to post a video with ads attached. I would really appreciate it if you would subscribe to my RSS feed over there:

Initially I got very excited by Tumblr, and it is still kind of a cool platform. The problem comes in that, especially with food, the corporate shills are doing their absolute best to take over. It is amazing how many people blithely reblog photos that have rather obviously been posted by McDonald's and Coca-Cola. It's not that I never consume those products, and I've given occasional thought to working for McDonald's to get an inside understanding of how their operations work, but I am certainly not going to do their advertising for them. It's also, I'm afraid, a very shallow cultural phenomenon. It's really my main criticism of Generation Y who has done and will do the most to define the culture of the internet. They're just kind of not the deepest thinkers. The oldest members of Generation Z are now about 9 years old and I am holding out some hope for them, unless of course our civilization dumbs them down too. It's not that there aren't any Y'ers with brains, but it hardly defines you as a group. I think, I hope, that will change. Generation Z will have grown up never having known a world without 9/11. Generation Y grew up never having known a world without The Simpsons. My generation, the X'ers, came of age in the shadow of Vietnam and the Counter-Culture Revolution, and so we were naturally rebellious. It may well be that peace and prosperity aren't that good for young people. If you'd like to join me on Tumblr anyway, I invite you to do so, and check in every once in awhile to make sure I follow everyone back, which I also do on Digg.

Anyway, I'm now almost halfway through my second year with really trying to create an internet presence. It has been a little disappointing in some ways, but very gratifying in others. Reaching people is hard, and in the process a few trolls have come after me and accused me of being self- promoting. But as the ancient Jewish scholar Hillel the elder asked:

"If I am not for myself, then who shall be for me? And when I am for myself, what am 'I'?"
