About this user
Born in Fukuoka, Japan, Motoki began studying violin by age four at the Suzuki Method violin school. He has performed as a soloist, a chamber musician, and orchestral player in Japan, South Korea, the United States, and throughout Europe. Motoki came to the US in 2001 to attend the University of North Texas in Denton in order to train as a basketball player, while also studying violin with Igor Borodin, composition with Joseph Klein, and conducting with Anshel Brusilow. A serious injury left him to focus on his passion of performing and sharing classical music. He moved to Boston and earned a B.M. in Film Scoring and Conducting from Berklee College of Music in 2007, studying with David Callahan and George Monseur, and is currently a candidate for an M.M. in Orchestral Conducting at the Boston Conservatory, studying with Bruce Hangen. The same year as his graduation from Berklee, Motoki founded Boston String Players, and has since been leading young string players to perform innovative programs together in a collaborative professional environment. With BSP, Motoki is building a community that connects musicians of different genres, visual artists, and arts patrons, and encouraging a broader audience to realize the relevancy of classical music in a modern setting. While not on the podium or working with young composers, Motoki can be found window-shopping on viviennewestwood.co.uk, or enjoying a glass of scotch at Casablanca in Harvard Square.
