About six years ago, one of the brightest and best students in our New Life Ministry orphanage on the border of Darfur went missing, Mary Achu. This was before our orphanage was completed and all we could do was provide food, education, discipleship, and scant medical care. With no housing yet available, most of our orphans slept in the open bush, or if they could find a tree they would sleep in high in its boughs in order to avoid hyenas. With no other food or education available in the community, it was never a good sign when one of our students didn't show up for class. It took us three days to find Mary. When we finally did, we discovered her uncle had captured her and literally tied her captive in his home. He told her "You're a big girl now. At this age, (approximately 12) you have duties for me and all your people. You need to stop going to that school, become a wife, and produce babies for your people." The rope burns on Mary's wrists and ankles burned for many days, reminding her of the harsh realities outside of her loving school at New Life Ministry. Although she was very quiet for a long time after her torture, Mary threw herself even more deeply into her studies. Today, Mary is not only an outstanding mentor for the two hundred plus younger girls at New Life Ministry, but she is so bright that she even translates for U.S. medical teams who volunteer in our clinic.
There is a dire need for ongoing education and vocational training for our orphans, while helping them to grasp how vital they are to the future of Sudan.
