The words are by Forceythe Willson (1837-1867) from his poem "To Hersa". The poem was first published anonymously in The Atlantic Monthly in March, 1866, then the following year in Willson's _The Old Sergeant and Other Poems_ (Ticknor and Fields, Boston).
